Research Progress and Results (1st year)

(1) Academic Research Achievements and Articles
All four members of this research team have done previous research and have written papers on the subject. Apart from the above participants, additional two prominent scholars from Macedonia who have interest in Korean Studies are also writing and presenting their articles in the conference. They have achieved significant results in researches. An outline of the previous research done by all the participants is in the above table.

(2) International Conference on Korean Studies
On October 27-28, 2011, a two-day international conference was held at the Macedonian university. Scholars in the area of Korean studies from Macedonia, Bulgaria and Korea participated. They presented papers on the strategies for the establishing and development of Korean studies in Macedonia and shared their opinions in discussions. Many Macedonian experts and students attended in this conference.

(3) Preparing Specialists and Exchange of Human Resources
An exchange was conducted with the purpose of preparing a next generation of scholars and cultivating specialists in the area of Korean Studies. Every semester from 2011, Macedonian and Korean students go to Korea and Macedonia for studying languages and cultures. Thanks to the AKS project, MOU in the field of education was signed between Macedonian university and Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in 2011. On the basis of this MOU, the students of two countries can learn each country’s language and culture more actively.

(4) Special Lectures for Promoting Korean Studies
Visits to Macedonia by Korean experts, giving lectures and participating in academic events were held. The co-participant in the currents research team Prof. Kim Wonhoi on April 5th 2011 gave lecture to the students from the Faculty of Humanities of the Macedonian university on “Korea, the Koreans and the Korean Language Education”. Also Prof. Kim Jae Uk, Director of the Centre for Korean Language and Culture at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, on October 27th gave special lecture to the Macedonian students on “Korean Ceremonies and Customs (관혼상제)”.

(5) Additional Academic Paper Presentation in World Forum
During the 1st World Humanities Forum, organized by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology of the Republic of Korea, the Korea Research Foundation and the Korea UNESCO Commission, held on 24th November 2011, Prof. Kim Won-hoi presented a paper related to Macedonia, under the title “Conflicts of Human Civilization and a Healing Place for the Humanities: The Balkans, Macedonia, Skopje.”

(6) Cultural Exchange
Around the time of the International Conference, events characteristic for what would be a Korea Culture Week, were organized. There were various initiatives, such as lectures on Korean culture and Korean film festivals, exhibition of island ‘Dokdo’ as well as colourful experiences of Macedonian culture.[1]

(7) Donation of Materials on Korean Studies
During the period of the International Conference, a ceremony of donating education materials in Korean studies to the Macedonian university was held. Korean participants donated books, movies on DVD, etc. Among the materials were a DVD for studying Korean language and culture and volumes I, II and III of a Korean language textbook. The materials are helpful to the students and the professors of Korean language for the more effective conducting of the classes.

(8) Raising of the rating of Korean Studies and Korean Language
When the current research was initiated in December 2010, Korean studies (the lectures in Korean language) were rated third module(3외국어) among the foreign languages in the Macedonian university. As the research was conducted, thanks to the activities and the support of the research team, Korean studies and Korean language’s rating was raised to second foreign module(2외국어). Accordingly, in the new curriculum the number of classes was increased and in 2011 more students, in comparison with the previous year, studied Korean.



[1] The records of the events were edited and saved onto a DVD, which submitted offline in the interim report to AKS.
