Abstract of Project Results
Project Name
A Study on the Educational Systems of Macedonia and Korea
with the Purpose of Laying the Foundation for Korean Studies
in Macedonia: Restoration of Records and
Intercultural Communication
Project Director
Prof. Ph. D. Maksim Karanfilovski
The main purpose of the current study is laying the foundation for Korean studies in Macedonia, which is situated in the central part of the Balkan peninsula. In order to set the basis for the official establishment and the consequent development of Korean studies in Macedonia, where Korean studies are still in their initial phase, the research needs to be conducted in the following two directions. The first direction involves restoring the records and improving the image, while the second direction, which is to follow the first, is scientific and policy-oriented research on preparing specialists in the area, organizing educational programs and building the necessary infrastructure.

(1) The restoration of the records and the improving of the image constitute the most basic groundwork. ‘Restoration of records’ is a collective term referring to the gathering and systematizing of materials about Korea, promotional information, media articles and documents, which can be found in Macedonia. As the current research is two-directional, respectively, it also involves the processing in the same way of the materials on Macedonia which have been accumulated in Korea. The restoration of the records, existing in both countries, is the foundation for improving the image of each country in its relation to the other one, and ultimately becomes the most significant source of getting to know the other nation, as well as to making oneself known to them.

For (2) the preparation of specialists in the area, the organization of educational programs and the building of the necessary infrastructure the materials gathered in the process of the restoration of the records can be used to get to know the other country and through them a method for the most effective way of cultural communication between the two countries can be researched and developed. That pattern for inter-cultural communication can be later applied to programs for Korean language education and Korean studies curriculums. Moreover, it can play the role of a ‘measuring stick’ in assessing the relative importance of certain methods and policies in building the infrastructure for the expansion of the foundations of Korean studies. Based on a general methodology on establishing the foundations of Korean studies, the current research has the ultimate goal of aiding the founding of a major in Korean language (or a Department of Korean language) at the Macedonia university, for the promotion of Korean studies in Macedonia, their consequent development and expansion, and on the grounds of that, the intensifying of the exchange of human and material resources between the two countries.

With the participation of two researchers from Korea, and two from Macedonia, the current project includes the organization of one international scientific conference per year. Every year each researcher present and publicize at least one scientific paper and make a monographs on Sbornik and “Korea and Macedonia: intercultural communication and language educationwith them. First, we planned to publish the articles in the journals. But, we choose the more effective way to develop the Korean studies in Macedonia. This was the publishing the monographs instead of journals. So, we published 2 monographs during this research. As a cultural event were held Korea cultural week and couple of lectures in Macedonia and Korea. With these academic and cultural activities, in Macedonian university now ‘Korean Language’ posits as the second foreign language (before Korean language was third and optional category). Also many Macedonian students seek to learn Korean and want to know about Korea and hope to go to Korea. It means that the establishment of Korean Language Department is on the way and will be accomplished, thanks to the supports from The Academy of Korean Studies and this project.

Remarkable Achievement of the project
* Outstanding Research results: Because of Macedonia’s geopolitical significance, the relations with Korea have been intensifying and the establishment of a foundation for the development of Korean studies is an important element of them. The present study constitutes the first example of cooperation in research of scholars from Macedonia and Korea and it can trigger further interest in the Macedonian academics towards Korea and bring active research in the future. During this project, 12 academic articles are presented and published as a result of the project. Among them, 9 articles are written by research director and co-researchers. 3 articles are prepared by Macedonian outstanding experts on Korean studies.
* Promoting Status of Korean Language to 2nd Foreign Language Module: When the current research was initiated in December 2010, Korean studies (the lectures in Korean language) were rated third module(3외국어) among the foreign languages. As the research was conducted, thanks to the activities and the support of the research team, Korean studies and Korean language’s rating was raised to second foreign module(2외국어). Accordingly, in the new curriculum the number of classes was increased and in 2012 more students, in comparison with the previous year, studied Korean.
* Contribution to the Human Resource Exchange between the two countries: Now, Macedonian and Korean students go to Korea and Macedonia for studying languages and cultures. Two Macedonian students (one per semester) go to Hankuk University of Foreign Studies for studying Korean language and culture. They also participated in the different cultural events and made acquainted with Korean students and culture. Two Korean students go to International Seminar for Macedonian language and culture in Ohrid. The students who have been acquainted with Korean culture(through reading literature, viewing films, listening to music, visiting exhibitions, organized events, meeting with Macedonian artists, poets, writers, professors and others, as well as stays in the country) spread information about it and popularize it in the whole society. This is the way to disseminate truths and knowledge about a culture that is more spontaneous and much for successful than the traditional way through official mass media or through official channels of the diplomatic and other missions to foreign countries. The greater the number of students studying a given language and getting acquainted with the culture of the native speakers of that language, the greater the number of those who fail in love with the culture of that people and the people itself.
* Foundation for Establishing Korean Language Department: The foundation of educational and research centre of Korean studies in Macedonia can become the most important bases of Korea to Macedonia or of Macedonia to Korea for the future mutual communication between the two countries. That is why, if the strategy for intercultural communication between Macedonia and Korea, obtained through this research, is used, the effective exchange and the development of the relations between the two countries can be maximized. Thanks to this project, now Macedonian university is on the way to establish “Korean Language Department”. And Macedonian university needs more supports from AKS for accomplishing this progress.

Conflicts of human civilization and a healing place for the humanities: The Balkans, Macedonia, Skopje

Proceedings
Relevance to the Project
Macedonia, which served as a centre of the ancient Greek civilization in history of Western civilization, is no longer functioning as a centre in modern society. Rather, it has turned into a place for conflicts of civilization among Albanians from the Illyrian civilization, the Balkan ethnic group based on the ancient Thracian civilization, and Slavic people who came down to the Balkan Peninsula during the 6th – 8th  century. These forces of civilization represented by Islam and Orthodoxy, Albanian and Slavic Macedonians coexist in Skopje, Macedonia, creating universality in their multicultural space. The creation of universalism is made possible through thinking and healing through the humanities.
This research looked into various aspects of conflicts of civilization in Macedonia and look into the reasoning and healing through the humanities in Macedonia. This research included the adaptation of double languages, joint research and education on history, embracing other cultures and a diversity of image data symbolizing the healing through the humanities.

Relevance to the Project
From 1967-1968 until today about twenty Macedonian lectorates have been opened in the world. Eleven of them work now but Macedonian is studied at many other universities where there are no Macedonian lectors and courses are taught by domestic lecturers. Macedonian language lectorates abroad are cultural centers of their own kind that contribute immensely to the popularization of Macedonian culture abroad and assist its faster and more successful integration with the other European and world cultures. The author seeks the best model way of opening and managing Macedonian studies in Korea and promoting Macedonian studies in Korean society.

Korean Studies in Macedonia in the Context of the Present State and Development of Korean Studies in Eastern and Southeastern Europe
Spas Rangelov
Name of Journal

Type of the Academic  Journal
monograph
Relevance to the Project
The central geographical position of the Republic of Macedonia itself on the Balkan peninsula is a potential asset for the future growth of Korea-related studies and research on a regional level (Macedonia is already well ahead of Greece, Albania and Kosovo in that field) and for the establishment of Skopje as a future regional hub for Korean studies. The author seeks the way for this in the article. The geographical proximity to Sofia, which has grown into a Korean studies hub for Southeastern Europe, is also a great advantage. Some students have already gone individually or in self-organized groups to attend Korea-related events, visit Korean restaurants, or explore the possibilities of taking the TOPIK exam in Sofia. From this point of view, Sofia, Bulgaria can provide proper example.

Teaching Macedonian to Korean Students
-on the Basis of Language and
Intercultural Difference
Kim, Wonhoi
Name of Journal

Type of the Academic  Journal
monograph
Relevance to the Project
For Korean and Korean students, the Macedonian language and culture is still strange and new one. Of course in Korea, many Slavic languages and cultures are taught. For example, we, in Korea, have Russian, Bulgarian, Czech, Polish and Serbo-Croation language departments. But, we do not have independent Macedonian department in Korea. In the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, in some Slavic departments are taught Macedonian language as the subject for comparative studies. So, teaching Macedonian to Korean students is not well established and is some kind of new challenge. The author writes and tries to make the proper methods of teaching Macedonian to Korean students by following two ways;
1. Teaching Macedonian to Korean students by dialectal and linguistic feature basis and by comparative Slavic method.
2. Teaching Macedonian to Korean students by intercultural communication points of view.

 Outline of the Research
The research team consists of four members. All four of them have done previous research and have written papers on the subject. Apart from the above participants, additional three prominent scholars from Macedonia who have interest in Korean Studies are also taking part in the two conferences (2011, 2012).     They have achieved significant results in writing research papers and presenting them at international conferences. The following is an outline of the previous research done by all the participants.
Research Paper 1
Maksim Karanfilovski, <The Korean Language in Macedonia>
Research Summary: Korea and Macedonia, the two people need a better mutual acquaintance, broader intercultural communication, strengthening of the friendship. The two universities (Macedonian University and Hankuk University of Foreign Studies) in the concrete case have a desire and an opportunity to make the needed historical first steps of the two cultures and the two peoples to come closer together despite the geographical distance and the cultural difference.
The study of Korean language in Macedonia and Macedonian language in Korea has a multilateral importance. Students from the two countries come to study the language of a new friendly country and they become the “first swallows” of a new friendship, while it, by itself, is an enormous treasure. This justifies the feeling of content from achieving a better understanding and deepening the friendship between the two people.
Research Paper 2
Spas Rangelov, <Inception and Development of Korean Studies in the Republic of Macedonia>
Research Summary: In this paper the author gives an account of the inception and development of the Korean language courses and the Korea related academic programme at the Ss Cyril and Methodius University of Skopje(shortly, Macedonian university) and more specifically at the “Blaže Koneski” Faculty of Philology, the only place that offers such courses in the Macedonia. The account is based on the author’s academic experience and communication with relevant actors, as well as on documents from the archives of the government and educational institutions. In the end of this article were followed 4 informative appendixes, related to the Korean studies in Macedonian university.

Paper 4
Kim Wonhoi, <Macedonia in Korea - It’s image and memory: An intercultural approach>
Research Summary: The study presents the results of the tracking and systematization of all materials in Korea concerning Macedonia. It is a comparative cultural research focusing on the image Koreans have of Macedonia. It states that in Korea, in all, there are 377 books, research papers and multi-media materials on Macedonia. Based on this research, five keywords were   proposed, describing the images Koreans associate with Macedonia. They are: Mother Theresa, Alexander the Great, green energy, holy land and a source of conflict on the Balkan peninsula.
An additional study (This part was presented in the 1st international humanities forum, 2011) expounds on the problems of Macedonia and Kosovo as places of ethnic and religious conflict on the Balkans and the efforts to look for a solution within the sphere of humanities.

Research Paper 6
Radica Nikodinovska, <The Semantics of Some Korean Proverbs and Their Equivalents in the Macedonian Language>
Research Summary: The purpose of this paper is to make an analysis of some Korean proverbs in order to discover whether they have semantic equivalents in the Macedonian language, and if that is the case it would mean that the two cultures are perceiving reality in a similar way, or otherwise it would mean that they have totally different modes of perceptions of the external reality. This analysis aims to open a window to the Korean language and culture and also encourage and stimulate Macedonian students to learn and study the Korean language and to carry out deeper analysis of the Korean proverbs. The analysis is conducted in base of a small dictionary of Korean proverbs with literally English translation accompanied by an extensive explanation of the meaning of proverbs.
Research Paper 7
Maksim Karanfilovski, <The Macedonian Language at Universities Abroad>
Research Summary: From 1967-1968 until today about twenty Macedonian lectorates have been opened in the world. The author seeks the way of opening Macedonian studies in Korea and promoting Macedonian in Korean society.
Research Paper 8
Spas Rangelov, <Korean Studies in Macedonia in the Context of the Present State and Development of Korean Studies in Eastern and Southeastern Europe>
Research Summary: The central geographical position of the Republic of Macedonia itself on the Balkan peninsula is a potential asset for the future growth of Korea-related studies and research on a regional level (Macedonia is already well ahead of Greece, Albania and Kosovo in that field) and for the establishment of Skopje as a future regional hub for Korean studies. In this sense, Sofia provides us proper example.

Research Paper 10
Kim Wonhoi, <Teaching Macedonian to Korean Students – on the Basis of language and Intercultural Difference>
Research Summary: For Korean and Korean students, the Macedonian language and culture is still strange and new one. Of course in Korea, many Slavic languages and cultures are taught. For example, we, in Korea, have Russian, Bulgarian, Czech, Polish and Serbo-Croation language departments. But, we do not have separate Macedonian department in Korea. In the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, in some Slavic departments are taught Macedonian language as the subject for comparative studies. Teaching Macedonian to Korean students is not well established and is some kind of new challenge. The author writes and tries to make the good methods of teaching Macedonian to Korean students by following two ways;
1. Teaching Macedonian to Korean students by dialectal and linguistic feature basis and by comparative Slavic method.
2. Teaching Macedonian to Korean students by intercultural communication points of view.
Research Paper 11
Radica Nikodinovska, < The Beginnings of Macedonian and Korean modern poetry : Kočo Racin and Kim So-Wol >
Research Summary: Despite the huge distance between Macedonia and South Korea and their different spiritual, historical, cultural, linguistic and other traditions, still, in some spots of their historical passage these two different people share a common destiny, being in different periods, part of a great empires (the Ottoman, the Serbian, the Bulgarian, the Byzantine Empire for the Macedonian people and the Empire of Japan for the Korean people). The aim of this paper is to give a brief comparison between the beginnings of Macedonian and Korean modern poetry through the analysis of the work and personality of two poets, the Macedonian poet Kočo Racin and the Korean poet Kim So-Wol. My choice of these poets is based on the period of time in which they lived and wrote poetry, which is the beginning of the 20th century, the period before the Second World War.

Accordingly, in the new curriculum the number of classes was increased and in 2012 more students, in comparison with the previous year, studied Korean.

I.              Research Summary

1.    Research Objectives

The main objective of the current research is preparing the foundations of Korean studies in Macedonia. The first factor which determines the necessity of the development of Korean studies in Macedonia is the countries geopolitical significance. Situated in the central part of the Balkan Peninsula, Macedonia borders with Bulgaria to the east, Serbia – to the north, and Greece and Albania – to the south. Because of its geopolitical position, its closeness to Greece (Byzantine), to Bulgaria, and in modern times, to the Yugoslavian Federation, since ancient times it has been involved in constant intensive struggle becoming a spot of great strategic importance. In future, if Korean companies and institutions establish a foothold there and if the exchange of human resources intensifies, Macedonia can become a bridgehead to the Balkans, even to Europe.
In respect to culture, Macedonia has many characteristics which are similar to Korea. Because of the distinctiveness of its nation and state, up until twentieth century the historical and cultural contacts of Macedonia with the Korean Peninsula had been very limited. That is the reason why the interest of the Korean society towards Macedonia still does not surpass the level of curiosity with an exotic flavour. It is a fact that, especially after the fall the Berlin wall, which symbolized the collapse of the socialist system, because of the Korean capital and technological superiority, the prevailing attitude towards the Balkan region, was one of counter-orientalism. From a comparative historical perspective, even geographically Korean and Macedonia are quite distant, it can be said that historically they are very close. That closeness comes from the fact that both countries are situated on the periphery of the capitalist system. Common elements such as underdeveloped capitalism, lack of agricultural revolution and civil revolution, fragile civil class and strong intellectuals, and colonial experience exist between the two countries because with they have achieved the modernization of their societies through a process different from the countries of the western hemisphere. Hence, the fundamental reason for this research is not simply the development of Korean studies in Macedonia, but promoting the development and the spreading of Korean studies in Macedonia through in-depth understanding of the two countries’ cultures.

2.    Contents, Scope and Methods of Research

In order to set the basis for the official establishment and the consequent development of Korean studies in Macedonia, where Korean studies are still in their initial phase, the research needs to be conducted in the following two directions. The first direction involves restoring the records (The Science of Bibliography Database) and improving the image, while the second direction, which is to follow the first, is scientific and policy-oriented research on preparing specialists in the area, organizing educational programs and building the necessary infrastructure. The restoration of the records and the improving of the image constitute the most basic groundwork. ‘Restoration of records’ is a collective term referring to the gathering and systematizing of materials about Korea, promotional information, media articles and diplomatic documents, which can be found in Macedonia.
Next, the nurturing of specialists in Korean studies and the development of education programs and infrastructure can be achieved through the use of the materials, acquired in the process of the restoration of the records of Macedonia and Korea. Through those records the researchers can get acquainted with each other’s country and are able to research and develop the most effective method of intercultural communication. This method will be applied in education programs in Korean language and Korean studies. It will also play the role of a measuring stuck in assessing the relative importance of different policies when building the infrastructure for the enlarging of the foundations of Korean studies.

6.    Effects and Project Results

Practical Aspects of the Research

* Application for the promotion of the results of the research through academic conferences
The conference constitutes a space where the results of a research can be applied in an effective way. The current project aims at organizing one international conference in Macedonia during the first year of the research period, and another – in Korea, during the second year. The focus of the research in the first year is the basic work of establishing a strategy for promoting understanding and intercultural communication, based on the materials collected in both countries. At the conferences during the second year of the research period, based on the research from the first year, the focus is on spread and development of Korean studies in Macedonia. Papers on intercultural communication and effective ways of presenting Korean studies were presented. In order to increase the promotion effect of the conference in Macedonia, it was held together with the annual international conference in Ohrid, organized by the Macedonian university. At the conference in Korea, during the second year of the project the intention is to increase the scope of the international participation by scholars from the Balkan region – from Macedonia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania and Greece experts in Korea.

* Application for the promotion of the results of the research trough media reports and publication
During the first year of the research project it is expected to uncover many interesting and forgotten records. These records were released to the media and the broadcasting corporations. In order to spread more widely, we prepared to publish the periods and monographs instead of journals. By this way, the research materials will not be released at once, but in series.

* Application for setting up a strategy for advance to Macedonia and the Balkan region
Macedonia and the Balkan region, to which it belongs, have rich history. At present, because of their geopolitical significance they attract the interest of the United States, China and the European Union in a competitive way. Even though, the physical distance between this region and Korea is significant, the advance of Korea towards it is very urgent and important matter because of the region’s potential and its future role as a bridgehead to Western Europe. For the right execution of this objective and for drafting suitable policies, a fundamental sociological research, as this one, is necessary. And also, inversely, the results of this kind of research can become the most important basis for setting up a strategy for the advance to this region.

Contribution to Science and Society
* Preparing the foundation for Korean studies in Macedonia
After the disintegration of the Yugoslavian federation, Macedonia, which was a part of it, became an independent country. Because of its geopolitical significance, the relations with Korea have been intensifying and the establishment of a foundation for the development of Korean studies is an important element of them. The present study constitutes the first example of cooperation in research of scholars from Macedonia and Korea and it can trigger further interest in the Macedonian academics towards Korea and bring active research in the future.

* Scientific contribution in Korea to the regional studies on Macedonia, the Balkans and Eastern Europe
At Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, where part of the current research is being conducted, there are Greek and Bulgarian Studies Department, Serbian and Croatian Studies Department, Romanian Studies Department and others, in which research and study the languages and the cultures of the countries from the Balkan region. Until now, Macedonia has been somewhat left out and it is in the need of a new interest and an activation of the research on it. With this project as a starting point, the academic interest in Korea towards this country can be stimulated this study can become a good opportunity to activate the research on the Balkan country. Moreover, the activating of the research could be expanded cover the Balkans in general.

* Contribution to the intercultural communication between Korea and Macedonia and the activation of exchange between the two countries
The foundation of educational and research centre of Korean studies in Macedonia can become the most important base for the future advance of Korea to Macedonia or the advance of Macedonia to Korea for the future mutual communication. That is why, if the strategy for intercultural communication between Macedonia and Korea, obtained through this research, is used, the effective exchange and the development of the relations between the two countries can be maximized.

Remarkable Achievement of the project
* Outstanding Research results
Because of Macedonia’s geopolitical significance, the relations with Korea have been intensifying and the establishment of a foundation for the development of Korean studies is an important element of them. The present study constitutes the first example of cooperation in research of scholars from Macedonia and Korea and it can trigger further interest in the Macedonian academics towards Korea and bring active research in the future. As a result of this project, 12 academic articles are presented and published. Among them, 9 articles are written by research director and co-researchers. 3 articles are prepared by Macedonian outstanding experts on Korean studies. You can find these articles and books in the attached files.

* Promoting Status of Korean Language to 2nd Foreign Language Module
When the current research was initiated in December 2010, Korean studies (the lectures in Korean language) were rated third module(3외국어) among the foreign languages. As the research was conducted, thanks to the activities and the support of the research team, Korean studies and Korean language’s rating was raised to second foreign module(2외국어). Accordingly, in the new curriculum the number of classes was increased and in 2011-2012 more students, in comparison with the previous year, studied Korean. The following document is the official order of the University for Korean language as the second foreign module.
<Official document for promoting Korean to 2nd foreign language module>
* Contribution to the Human Resource Exchange between the two countries
Macedonian and Korean students go to Korea and Macedonia for studying languages and cultures. Two Macedonian students (one per semester) went to Hankuk University of Foreign Studies for studying Korean language and culture. They also participated in the different cultural events and made acquainted with Korean students and culture. Two Korean students went to International Seminar for Macedonian language and culture in Ohrid. The students who have been acquainted with Macedonian culture(through reading literature, viewing films, listening to music, visiting exhibitions, organized events, meeting with Macedonian artists, poets, writers, professors and others, as well as stays in the country) spread information about it and popularize it in the whole society.

* Foundation for Establishing Korean Language Department
The foundation of educational and research centre of Korean studies in Macedonia can become the most important bases for the future advance of Korea to Macedonia or the advance of Macedonia to Korea for the future mutual communication between the two countries. That is why, if the strategy for intercultural communication between Macedonia and Korea, obtained through this research, is used, the effective exchange and the development of the relations between the two countries can be maximized.
Thanks to this project, now Macedonian university is on the way to establish “Korean Language Department”. The following e-mail letter is the evidence for it. But, because of a lack of additional funds and support, this process now makes no progress and temporary gets difficulty. The Macedonian university needs more supports from AKS for accomplishing this progress and establishing Korean Language Department.
The following pictures are panoramic views of the Chinese Language Centre, located in the National library, Skopje, Macedonia. Because of geopolitical importance and needs, China already set the Chinese department in Macedonian university. It shows us the way for the future seeding and promoting methods of Korean studies in Macedonia.
